Today, in the United States, 5.2 million people are living with Alzheimer’s disease. It is characterized by progressive changes in brain tissue to include tangled bundles of nerve fibers. The diagnosis can be difficult, and currently there is no treatment that can delay, reverse, or stop the changes that are occurring in the brain.
Symptoms are variable and are due to the progressive decline in cognitive function.

The following are some of the signs and symptoms that Alzheimer’s patients may exhibit:

  • Short attention span-inability to focus for long.
  • Language problems-inability to understand what is heard or read and trouble finding the right words.
  • Apathy-lack of motivation, behavioral and mood changes
  • Short term memory loss is almost always a problem.
  • Difficulty learning new skills.
  • Difficulty performing familiar tasks.
  • Poor judgement-lack of safety awareness, excessive spending.

Caring for a person with Alzheimer’s disease at home is a difficult task. Basic activities of daily living-eating, talking, sleeping, dressing, are often hard to manage for both the person with Alzheimer’s and their families.

At Caring Solutions Home Care our Caregivers are trained to meet the challenges that come with caring for people with this disease, while providing the often much needed respite for their family members.

Some of the Services we provide are:

  • Personal care such as bathing, grooming, dressing, toileting
  • Home Safety & Fall /Injury Prevention through home inspection for hazards such as clutter and rugs which can contribute to falls, limiting their access to household chemicals, lighters, matches etc. Minimizing safety risks by recommending hand-held showerheads, shower chairs, non-skid bathmats and by never leaving them unattended in the shower.
  • Assistance during mealtime. Whether they require meal preparation, set-up assistance or need to be fed, we can provide complete mealtime assistance, arranging for a quiet, calm atmosphere limiting noise and distractions which can often present obstacles to a positive mealtime experience for Alzheimer’s patients.
  • Communication-Both understanding and being understood can be a challenge and a cause of frustration. By choosing simple words and short sentences, using a calm tone of voice and minimizing noise and distractions we can help the individual focus on what is being said. Utilizing language aides such as picture boards can often enhance communication efforts.
  • Providing diversional activities and daily exercise-Daily exercise is important to help alleviate frustration and anxiety and to promote a more restful sleep at nighttime. Simple activities often are best, especially when building on existing skills. If the person enjoys gardening or a simple task such as folding clothes it should be encouraged and incorporated into their daily routine.
